Skype for Business (S4B) - previously called Microsoft Lync - is the business version of Skype. It is a desktop application that enables instant messaging, video and voice chat, desktop sharing, presentation recording, shared whiteboard, file transfer and more.
S4B integrates with users exchange (outlook) calendar as well as determining when their computer was last active to deliver a user "presence" throughout Office 365. This presence is a small coloured dot that appears next to the users name through Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive and more. If you open a shared document from OneDrive that's marked as "last modified by John Doe", you'll see next to his name if he's currently "busy" or "in a meeting" (do not disturb), "away" (inactive computer), "available" or more. You can hover over his name and send him an email or IM or make a video or voice call straight from that document/application.
Allowed uses are configurable as S4B can either connect only to internal contacts or be allowed to communicate with any external contact or personal Skype users. S4B meetings automatically provide a link to join the meeting from the email invitation, that includes a phone number for those on the go to dial in to the conference.
S4B functionality is vastly superior to many inter-office communication tools and can be purchased stand alone or is included in the Office 365 suite. Check out licences options or contact us today to learn more!
